Run Flash on iPad with Frash

Flash on iPad ? Steve Jobs says, “No, it can’t happen because flash is not meant for its touchscreen technology.” But he is proven wrong by a developer with his new program, the Frash. With Frash, he was able to run flash on an iPad.

Frash is originally an adobe flash plug in that was released for the Android phones recently. You can use flash in the mobile Safari browser of iPad with Frash. See below the video of playing some flash games like “Kitten Cannon” on iPad with Frash.

Frash is still in its unstable form but it will soon be ready and Apple will have to find some other excuse for not running flash on iPad and iPhone. You have to jailbreak you iPad to use Frash. But if you don’t want to miss all those cool flash games, why not jailbreak you iPad. It may even work the same way on iPhone but only on the 3GS and iPhone4.

  1. I dont think you understand, he doesnt say it cant happen he says he will not let it happen. This is as he believes flash is an outdated format and that we all need to move forward to HTML5.

    Matthew,

Thanks for your comment and you are right. We should all move to HTML 5. But what we were trying to say is that there an option to include flash in iPad and there are a lot of flash applications and games out there that the iPad users do not want to miss.

LOL sounds like the chinese version of flash!

  4. t says:

So King Stevie won’t allow it to happen. Iphone’s getting old now, people have had two or three, they’re realising jailbreaking is easier than they thought, and have either tried it or know someone that has, and will probably get round to it to escape the iron grip

Yes I understand that but if apple didnt remove flash would anyone really move over to Html5, maybe eventually but at the moment it seems within the next few years we will all be using HTML5.

    Matthew:
I don’t think you understand – it should not matter what one person believes. If HTML5 is so superior, the users and developers will naturally move to the environment that offers the best experience. Jobs is repeating the mistakes he made with personal computers. iPhone will loose it’s leader role to android phones from multiple manufacturers that allow the user to decide what they want to run on a device they purchase. I am a iphone 3gs and ipad owner who will likely migrate to an alternative with my next purchase.

@MatthewDrane, but at the same time there is still a lot functionality you can’t pull off yet with HTML5, there’s a reason why Google Chrome is heavily supporting Flash at the moment because they realise this too. HTML5 will eventually be the standard but this bullying attitude by Apple doesn’t help.

Apple are full of hypocrisy, I just went to Apple.com/trailers from a PC with my Firefox browser and tried to watch a film trailer, I got a nice big message popping up telling me to download Quicktime as without the Quicktime plugin the trailer won’t play, you really can’t make it up. They don’t care about the future of the internet, it’s a purely vindictive action against Adobe

I think the real reason behind Apple’s “jihad” against Flash, is purely down to the fact that Apple have zero presence on the web, they can’t compete with Google and even Microsoft in this area, in fact I struggle to think of even one decent web service by Apple, whereas by backing HTML5 and going after Adobe is pretty easy and they can claim some sort of importance even though HTML5 is not an Apple technology.

  8. john says:

anyone who has developed in flash for more than 0.5 of a second would realise html 5 does not encompass ALL flash capabilities. Flash still have its role for the time being.

  9. Spug says:

Why does everyone think Flash will be replaced by HTML5? Find one sweet flash game, a really good one, a really deep and graphically complex one and tell me exactly how you think HTML5 will be able to replicate it – as good or better than Flash. Oh, that’s right, nobody knows what they are talking about. Gotcha. Thanks for the clarification.

There are things I really hate about Flash and things I really like about HTML5. But HTML5 is still in a fetal stage as far as anyone is really concerned. Until a true open-source video codec is available that is 100% cross-browser, flash will be the only way to make sure that its playable on everyone’s machine/device (cept us poor iPhone users, thanks for that Steve, we appreciate you saving us from usability!). Only until then will the markup for embedding a video actually weigh less than the HTML5 counterpart which for 100% compatibility STILL has FLV as a backup. And mind you that’s just video we are talking about.

  10. Mike says:

HTML5 isn’t expected to be ready before 2022!

Jobs seems to forget – without Adobe, Apple would never have survived the 80s. PostScript drove Apple’s Laserwriter, and Illustrator gave it purpose!

    Flash rules. OK!

  11. Pat says:

@Matthew There are still many many things you can do with flash that you can’t do with HTML 5 (which STILL isn’t a standard) and won’t be able to until a subsequent HTML 5.5 or later release which could be 5+ years down the road. Even a simple video stream isn’t possible with the current spec of HTML 5′s video tag.

Youtube’s John Harding offers some perspective: http://apiblog.youtube.com/2010/06/flash-and-html5-tag.html

  12. Jason says:

    Who cares

They did not want to invest resources and time in a buggy platform.

Look how Android just got hacked because of a Flash security flaw.

“Frash is still in unstable form”…. lol….. the real flash isn’t even stable on Android.

If you desperately want Flash then you have the option to buy a Flash compatible phone.

If you don’t want Flash on your Android, that might be tough luck. You can stop it auto loading, but you will always have it there festering away waiting to spit ads at you.

(But yeah…. there are some awesome flash games….. but 95% are crud)

  13. Blake says:

Mike is correct about the target date of HTML5. It is supposed to be ready for full use by 2022. In the mean time what are we supposed to do, take a huge step backwards and wait for the HTML/CSS technology to catch up with Adobe. Yes it would be great not to have 3rd parties involved, if you are Apple, Google, etc… but I am currently in the middle of some great Flash classes and I’m impressed! I think the smart company will simply put out a product (phone, touch pad, whatever…) and let the OWNER of the phone decide what they want to do with it. As an Apple computer owner I have no desire for a phone or a device that limits my play and creativity, and isn’t that what Apple is supposed to stand for? Isn’t that how they have marketed themselves these past years. Let the consumers decide through the market how they want this to go down. Maybe Adobe will surprise us??? Also, how does this affect Javascript which Actionscript is based on?

  14. I am not a supporter of Flash; it is outdated, and the last update was around 2005(only security updates have been made). The websites are not supposed to be lazy, and not support HTML5:Safari and Opera support HTML5; so this becomes a matter of preference, and being lazy. Whenever I go to a website, I type HTML5 to go to that format, not Flash. It is illegal to attempt to port Frash(the Flash for the iPad) Should this happen you will have shortened battery life and an arrest, as what the developer is doing is illegal, and punishable by imprisionment. If you want Flash, buy an android or any OS that supports this outdated plug in; for me HTML5 is my standard; don’t forget, when the bondi blue iMac came out all wanted a “floppy port” and complained; you are doing that to the iPad; I will happily take all of those who have an iPad who choose to “make a choice” to complain; I was one of the one’s who talked to Hiawatha Bray of the Boston Globe who admitted he was wrong in writing and endorsed the Bondi BlueiMac before sending it to condemnation.

    If I’m Adobe, I wouldn’t make a Mac version of CS6.

  17. Isley Vtania says:

    So….
Apple has software issues with adobe apps…big deal. But for God’s sake, Jobs shud stop open attacks on adobe. Apple owes adobe alot!!! And the HTML 5 thingy everyone is yelping about is largely incomplete. The only selling point HTML5 evangelists are focusing on is the Video streaming…so? Big deal.

Personally, i think they are the same and both Flash and HTML 5 can work together to produce functional websites and even Web-Apps. But attempting to phase of flash:- unthinkable….

  18. Gihan says:

Hey, Move to Android, support both flash with HTML5.

  19. Tony Green says:

Apple sucks because of Flash. Steve Jobs owes a lot to Adobe, but he stubborn man. Instead he should give Flash support on all Apple devices and have happy customers, instead he just forces people to develop hacks and dislike him even more. Complete fault for this situation is in Steve Jobs.

  20. TheDiscoPlumber says:

I wonder how processor intensive the games can be before it crashes the iPad. I’m sure solitaire games like Texas Mahjong will work fine, but what about something like Alien Slayer 3D?

  21. Jane says:

I will not purchase an ipad because it does not support flash. I need to watch the great educational video lectures and animations offered by sites like Learnerstv.com ..all of these are flash…

As regards HTML 5 different browsers support different video formats. Firefox does not support MP4, H.264,WebM support in html 5.

Different browsers support different formats and nobody is going to adopt it soon unless there is a general consensus regarding the format…or else a website need to provide videos in different formats to satisfy users using different browsers..

Flash is there to stay…Steve cannot dictate terms…Result will be Adroid tablets will be the winner.. There are lots of tablets coming out soon using Android…
