
My Documents is the common folder users store all their personal data which includes our document files, movies, music, downloads and photos. Why my documents should be moved to some other place?
Normally the documents are stored in the C Drive where the windows files are installed. In case of a system crash, we will never able to recover that data. The system drive is portioned in such a way that a minimum size is given for the system drive. As the size documents increases the system performance will be hampered.
How to Move My Documents Folder location in Win XP
1) Right click the My Documents icon situated the desktop.
2) Select properties.
3) Click on Move and choose an alternate location for moving the documents.
4) Click on Apply and then Ok. Windows will prompt whether the user want to move all of the documents to the new location or not. Select Yes. Now all your documents will be moved to the new location and now they are safe from a system crash.
How To Move My Documents Folder location in Vista
There is a slight change for Vista as My Documents folder is replaced by a Documents folder. The default location of folder is C:\Users\[user]\Documents where [user] is your Vista user name and C Drive is the default windows installation drive.. The process to change the location is somewhat same.
1) Click on the Start button.
2) Right-click on Document. If the computer has multiple users click your account name given in the right-hand menu.
3) Now select Properties.
4) In the Properties dialog choose the Location tab.
5) Now, click on Move. In the Destination dialog box specify new location for your Documents. Click on Select Folder option to return to the Properties dialog. The new selected location appear in the text box. 6) Click on Ok. Now Vista will prompt you to confirm again and click Yes. Now your task is done and the documents will get shifted over to the new location.
