A very powerful feature is available in Windows Vista to create Hard Disk partition without data Loss which is called Shrink Volume. In this article describes how to create hard disk partitions with the Shrink Volume Option without losing any data. These simple steps will help you to create new hard disk partitions out of the existing hard disk partitions without any data loss:
1. Right click on Computer icon and the Click on Manage
2. Now a Computer Management Screen will be opened. Click on the Disk Management option in the left hand pane.
3. Right click on the partition which you would like to shrink, or make it smaller in size, and then click on Shrink Volume.
4. After you have selected the Shrink Volume, a window will be opened and will show you the size after shrinking operation and size which will be removed out of this partition.
5. Select the required size which you want to shrink. You have to consider the fact that that maximum shrinking space is limited by the size of files already in use by your files on the disk. Sometimes due to the presence of page-files or other OS files that can’t be moved, the shrinking option will be limited to some extent. Now press the Shrink button. Now a query window will be shown which will estimate the volume which can be shrinked.
6. After this process, the original partition size will get reduced and a part of the partition will become a free space which will be shown in green color. You can right click on this area to produce a new partition out of it. Now click on “New Simple Volume option” and continue with the default options to make the new partition.
Thus you can create a partition on your laptop computer yourself without causing any data loss.
