When an external media is connected to a system, windows looks in the root directory of it for the file autorun.inf and executes the commands in that if found. but this poses a serious risk. When a device infected with a malware and autorun.inf is connected to the system the shell menu is modified such that the malware runs automatically on double clicking the drive.
