I prefer FastStone Capture.
For screen captures I use FastStone Capture. I have found this utility to be a lot more flexible and user friendly than other capture programs. You can get the free portable version of FastStone here (download the ZIP package and extract to a folder of your choice): http://www.portablefreeware.com/?id=775
helpful tools, thanks for the post..
You missed one important tool: jing :)
Greenshot, good piece of software, windows, open source, callouts and arrows can be overlayed too.
Great list, was looking for this yesterday, but agree with latest comment, jing is also great.
these are great, thanks for sharing :)
What about the built-in function for OSX users? CMD-SHFT-4 will allow you to select the part of the screen and it will create a capture. Guess what? All built-in to the o/s!
Not only that, if you use OnyX for system maintenance, there’s a preference that you can access where you can switch the type of graphic it’s saved out as: BMP, GIF, JPG, JPG 2000, PDF, PICT, PNG, SGI, TGA, or TIFF.
Thanks a ton for such a nice information.
Will love to read more from here…
Nice one

I’m very surprised there was no mention of Aviary’s free screen capture tool. It’s web based, free, fast, requires no account, saves to desktop, and offers robust editing features. Works with or without browser plugins.
For me it replaced Jing because almost everything I capture is in the browser anyways…
Website: http://aviary.com
Firefox Addon: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/11587
Chrome Addon: https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/ncgcgghbabbopfcpgcjpfffdgnbadegf
I use Little Snapper for webpages and it’s great. It will copy the entire page, not just what’s visible. Unfortunately it’s Mac only and it’s not free.
I don’t require much to capture my desktop, but when i need to capture a screenshot, I use Pearl Crescent Page Saver – a firefox plugin.
Yes SnagIt has been #1 for me. But it’s always good to know some alternatives if something happens….especially free ones woohoo!
Try Ashampoo Snap 3. It’s pretty awesome :)
Great article. I would like to add three tools that I have used (and continue to use)
1. Snipping tool (built into windows Vista confirmed and 7?) – use the vista search bar to find it. I don’t use this anymore though
2. WebSnapshot (adobe air) – good for getting full website screenshots including below the fold
3. PicPick – has a full suite of light image editing tools including screen captures. This replaced Snipping tool for me
Capture full screen, active window.
Capture windows, buttons, toolbar, controls and other windows objects.
Capture selected region.
Capture scrolling windows and entire web pages.
Capture fix-size region.
Maybe good additions to this list are the checklist of criteria for selecting a screen capture tool at http://www.indoition.com/screen-capture-tool-choosing.htm, as well as the list of screen capture tools at http://www.indoition.com/screen-capture-tools-survey.htm.
